Have you ever wondered why we started putting popcorn on the Christmas tree or even on a string in the first place?
Well it started way back in the 1840’s people started putting food such as popcorn and cranberries. Articles say because “the inexpensive snack food was seen as a festive, fun treat, particularly by young people.” But that’s not the only reason. They think this salty and sweet tradition originated from when outdoor trees were decorated with food to feed wildlife.
Today popcorn decorations are considered an American Christmas decoration that dates back to Victorian England. These were American colonists in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Fun Fact: There is also a national popcorn string Day on December 13th.
