Mental Health, and Why It's So Important by Ashlynn Meierer

Updated: Sep 7, 2021

When we hear the words “Mental health”, people tend to either be dismissive of the subject, or tiptoe around it and try to avoid it. I’m going to be writing a series of articles to try and get rid of the way a vast majority of people seem to view and treat mental health. If these articles are unable to change the stigma and way it’s viewed, I hope to at least inform others about the struggles of those with awful mental health and offer helpful tips on how to cope in a healthy way, advice on how to make caring for yourself easier, ways those who aren’t struggling with mental health can help friends or loved ones who are, and places to reach out for help. Please try to remember that everyone is struggling differently and no two people have a situation that is exactly the same.

With September being suicide awareness month, the topic of mental health is something of upmost importance to bring up, especially after the effects of the pandemic. I’ve noticed more and more that there’s a nasty issue with people being gaslit into thinking that they don’t have mental health problems or that if they do have mental health issues that they’re broken or something is wrong with them. That isn’t the case at all. Regardless of what people may think, to an extent, everyone has some sort of issue with their mental health, be it something as small as general anxiety, or something as large as PTSD, BPD, or a dissociative disorder. No one is 100% fine, and that’s okay.
