The Man, The Myth, The Teacher..? By Ashlynn Meierer

Updated: Sep 7, 2021

If you’ve been here even a semester, you for sure know the history teacher by the name of Thomas Pierce. He’s been teaching for several years and even became a coach for sports at the school. He seems to be very happy with his career choice. But this raises the question, “Why did Pierce start teaching and decide to start coaching in the first place?”. To figure this out we need to look at his childhood and the influences he experienced then.

Pierce was from a young age positively influenced to be a teacher and coach by not only his parents, but his grandparents as well. Both of his grandparents were teachers, his dad always talked about how he wanted to be a coach for sports, and his mother often talked about how she wished she could have been a teacher. Later on down the road, in college, Pierce became a history major. “There are only so many routes you can go as a history major, and teaching is one of the more favorable routes to go”, Pierce explained during our interview. Overall Pierce explained that during his career, he didn’t regret his choice and grew to love his profession as the uneasiness ebbed away.
